ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023

FROM THE HEAD

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Bentley Community,

The 2022-2023 school year marks another year of meaningful growth, successful philanthropy, and strength for the future. The dedicated support of our community for our key fundraising initiatives, Bentley’s Annual Fund, Gala, and Senior Class Gift totaled $1,062,084 and fueled our progress. Together, we increased parent participation in the Annual Fund from 59% in 2021-2022 to over 80% for the 2022-2023 school year and we hit a milestone with record attendance at the Gala.

Philanthropy is a distinguishing element of any independent school and last year’s fundraising achievements are a testament to our collective dedication to Bentley’s students, faculty, and staff. In addition to supporting the professional growth of our faculty, the 2022-23 Annual Fund allowed for a number of key enhancements to our campuses, including upgrading outdated projectors with high-definition displays, completing HVAC systems on both campuses, a new Computer Science classroom on the Upper School Campus, resurfacing Tennis Courts, and completing full security camera and surveillance systems for K-12.

Your philanthropy has also helped to support programmatic improvements that benefit our students K-12. We built out our literacy library resources to support our youngest learners, expanded our K-12 Mini Term, increased support for trips, implemented our new “No Bullying” program for K-8, and enhanced resources for Bentley’s DEIB efforts.

Last year’s success has given us great enthusiasm for future fundraising initiatives, and we are grateful to each and every one of you for your ongoing support of the school. Your generosity continues to help enhance the experience of every Bentley student and faculty member.

Gratefully,

Christie Moncharmont

Head of School

IMPACT

Impact

"I enjoy giving back to the Annual Fund because, with what I can give, I contribute to both the preparation of staff to provide a top-notch education, and to those families whose position I once found myself in. My now former Bentley students were given life-changing opportunities due to generous donors, and with that, I will forever dwell in gratitude."

– NYDIA TAMAYO

Kindergarten Teaching Associate, Head of Bentley Summer of '23 Program, and Alumni Parent

Bentley's Annual Fund provides critical support that benefits every member of the Bentley community, particularly our dedicated faculty and talented students. Your generosity allows us to achieve a level of excellence in our curriculum, programs, and facilities that would not be possible without your support.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, faculty were able to attend various conferences and professional development opportunities this year. Gifts to the Annual Fund also help the School prioritize campus improvements, especially when reacting to unprecedented challenges. Below is a list of some of the improvements made to both campuses.

LAFAYETTE CAMPUS

  • Replacing outdated projectors in classrooms with new HD large screen TVs

  • Installed new signage across the campus

  • Improved air flow and temperature control with the installation of new HVAC units with state-of-the-art air filtration

  • Purchased new, high capacity, computer systems for the creation of a new Computer Programming Classroom

  • Purchased and installed security cameras with 24-hour surveillance campus-wide for student safety

  • Teacher Professional Development

  • Financial Aid for students to include Food and Trips

HILLER CAMPUS

  • Purchased and installed security cameras with 24-hour surveillance campus-wide for student safety

  • Began the process of installing additional fencing around the campus for improved campus security

  • Improved air flow and temperature control with the installation of new HVAC units with state-of-the-art air filtration for Middle School

  • Teacher Professional Development

SENIOR CLASS GIFT

The 2023 Senior Class Gift initiative was led by Sharon Murphy (Thomas ’23) and Mary Randolph (Hannes ’23). Thanks to their efforts, the senior class raised more than $11,000 for something that will have an immediate and joyful impact on the daily experience of every person on the Upper School campus.

The Senior Class Gift is a cherished Bentley tradition that allows each graduating class to leave a legacy on the Lafayette campus. This year, the Class of 2023 Senior Gift will go towards purchasing an ice cream machine and upgraded lounge furniture for The Commons, which is the heart of the Lafayette campus and a gathering place where our students made so many fond memories.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2023

From institutions like Amherst, Bowdoin, and Cornell to Stanford, Tufts, and UCLA, the 78 members of the Class of 2023 earned 208 offers of admission to 175 colleges and universities, enrolling at 52 different institutions.

The Class of 2023 had 32 among them remain in California for college, while 45 graduates will go out of state, and one student will attend college in Canada. (Three students plan to take a gap year before attending the colleges to which they have committed.)

"I give to the Annual Fund each year to celebrate the excellence and camaraderie of our Bentley community. By giving, not only do I further our school mission and programs, but I know that my contributions directly enhance learning opportunities in the classroom. By supporting the Bentley Annual Fund, I provide even more of a love of learning and memorable experiences for our students."

"My commitment to the Annual Fund is deeply rooted in the incredible journey I share with my students. Our classroom is full of cultural exploration and linguistic discovery, bound together by their curiosity and eagerness to learn. Every day, their vibrant energy fills me with appreciation and fuels my determination to make a lasting impact. Through your contributions, I not only honor their remarkable dedication but also take part in shaping a brighter future for each student. The Annual Fund provides resources that empower me to bring innovative teaching methods and diverse learning experiences to the classroom. Together, we forge a path that not only educates but also inspires and empowers our students to embrace the global community with open hearts and open minds."

– ASHLEY MEEHAN

Upper School World Languages Department Chair, Spanish Teacher

We share the 2022-23 Annual Report to recognize and honor our donors -- the parents, trustees, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends -- who have so generously contributed to Bentley School. Our continued growth and success rest on our ability to maintain a balance of prudent financial management while continuing to enhance programs and activities.

Throughout our 100+ year history, Bentley has continued to thrive because of the extraordinary philanthropy and deep-rooted commitment of our community. Your support of the Annual Fund not only enhances our core academic programs, it also enriches student life, supports small class sizes, offers robust professional development opportunities for our teachers, enables annual facility enhancements, and strengthens our community. We are grateful for every gift, no matter the size, and we know that an institution flourishes when the entire community feels invested in and responsible for its success.
